DC — Awesome South African Wines
September 21 @ 5:00 pm - 8:00 pm
Lying between the 27th and 34th degrees south of the Equator, South Africa wards off a hot climate with the cold Bengula current flowing up the western lands and the Cape Doctor flowing south-east. This cooling ocean air is moved further inland and allows for an extended growing season, allowing the ripeness of the grapes to be reached with balanced levels of acidity and sugar. In addition to these cooling air flows, the South African wine regions in the Western Cape are peppered with prominent mountain ranges that offer various altitude levels, leading into varying site climates. Vines planted on south facing sites on mountain slopes are much cooler than those planted on valley floors. This allows for more diversity in varietal choice, harvest date, and quality of production. The common varities in South Africa are many. For this tasting, we will review Chenin Blanc, Sauvignon Blanc, Viognier, Cinsault, Pinotage, and a red blend or two.
