Flight of the Sparkle: How Champagne influenced sparkling wines globally

Sparkling wine is recorded as being intentionally made in Limoux, France as early as 1531. The English started experimenting with Sparkling wine in the 1600s and intentionally made sparkling wine in 1664. They received wines in barrels from France, added sugar to adjust the taste, then bottled for sale. While in bottle, the wine would referment, creating an unintentional sparkle. Sometime between 1695 and 1698, in Champagne, France the first intentionally made Champagne was created by adding sugar to the base wine and fermenting twice. The process evolved over time and across the world producers mimicked the style, as well as started creating their own styles, such as Cava, Prosecco, Cramant, and more.
