Valduero Winery Masterclass (Ribera del Duero, Spain)
July 18 @ 7:30 pm - 9:00 pm
Bodegas Valduero was founded in 1984 by the current president, Don Gregorio Garcia Viadero, and his daughter Yolanda, who is the winemaker. It was one of the first wineries to be incorporated into the D.O. Ribera del Duero and is situated in the village of Gumiel de Mercado, within the province of Burgos, an area where some of the best grapes in Ribera del Duero are grown. We are also probably the highest winery in the region at 840m (2,750 ft). The red wines are all 100% Tinto Fino and the grapes come from gobelet vineyards, planted using a 2,60m x 1,15m formation. Vineyard age ranges from 12 to over 40 years old and the vines are very low yielding. The root stock has graft cuttings from a vineyard of indigenous vines over 100 years old. The soil is mainly clay, with limestone and some sandy patches. Traditional cultivation techniques and only natural, organic fertilizer are used. The whole winery has a natural, constant temperature of 12ºc, due to the fact that it is buried under ground.
About the speaker: Howard Friedman.
Howard has been in the wine industry for over 35 years, working in retail shops, wholesale sales and now he owns a small importing company, South River Imports. He travels extensively in France, California, Italy and Spain touring the vineyards and tasting in the cellars of some of the world’s greatest producers, including Romanee Conti in Burgundy. In creating his own importing company, Howard traveled throughout Spain searching for properties to represent in the U.S. His particular focus remains on family owned wineries producing high quality wines that represent the particular style of the area of production. He strongly believes they offer superb values in their price range and are authentically ‘Spanish’ wines – not wines from Spain that are made for the U.S. It took 2 years of work to find Bodegas Bleda in Jumilla, Spain and another year to find Bodegas do Campo in Galicia. Over the last 10 years, Howard added Ramon Canals, a vintage dated, RD, Reserva Cava from Penedes, Bodega Katxina from Txakoli, Pago de los Capellanes and Bodegas Valduero from Ribera del Duero, Paloma de Plata from Rias Baixas(Albarino), Legitim from Priorat, Casar de Burbia from Bierzo and many others. During his last visit to Spain, I traveled over 2000 miles searching for the best that the country has to offer.
